This unit 17 covers aids in the classroom. There are so many great ways to facilitate the teaching of a language other than paper and pen. Today as technology is being used more and more it is also a wonderful tool or aid for teaching. Smart boards IWBs can really eliminate the use of and waste of paper where most of the information and lesson planning can be accessed online. In the past Overhead projectors and cassette recorders were what I used all the time and they still are very helpful aids for teaching. The student's also focus better when their gaze has to be on just a projector even though it can be cumbersome to put up and the overhead sheets can get messy when you handwrite on them. Cassette recorders and CD's are equally useful for listening exercises, but it's important to know where to start, pause and how to replay if needed and to find it quickly, that can be an embarassing problem. I prefer the online access to YouTube video's where students can both hear and see a language spoken, and a point made for grammar for example or to show something to be discussed and later role-played. The long list of websites that help and assist in language learning including the websites that have dictionaries are invaluable. I'm particularly amazed at the long list of online materials and links that this unit offers at the end, from newspapers to exam preparation sites to how to go about learning English when first arriving in the country. The access to the many games and activity sites is so helpful for a teacher when trying to design a fun, interesting and well thought through lesson.
