Productive skills have some differences to receptive skills and these have to be considered when teaching speaking and writing.
I’ve learned that as a teacher one has to be creative when selecting activities to encourage students to take part and apply the language that they have learned.
Thus unlike in reading and listening where students have less potential to exposure to their peers (especially) they will need to be given a comfortable platform in which to practice speaking. I agree that during the activate stage actual participation is more important than the outcome.
One has to guide students and supply them with the correct forms during the study phase.
As for teaching writing creativity plays a greater role than any of the other skills. Students have the opportunity to express themselves.
Increased exposure to the English language including grammar skills learned through reading and study phases can then be applied when writing.
The communicative activities and writing topics should be adapted as well as be of interest to the students to best elicit active participation. Local and current events including poop culture is a good start.
