In Unit 11, I have learnt two receptive skills: reading and listening, which are used for a purpose or entertainment. When reading or listening, there’re a number of specialist skills, such as predictive skills, specific information (scanning), general idea (skimming), detailed information and deduction from context. But there’re some potential problems with reading and listening. In order to approach language difficulty, it’s important to pre-teach unknown vocabularies and carefully select texts so as to focus on what students know. Before choosing a topic, it’s better to get to know the students and their interest. And you can also create interest in engage phase activity even if the students are not originally interested in the topic. When providing comprehension tasks, it should be a realistically achievable challenge. Remember all of these, and expose students to reading and listening as much as possible.
