Modals help express or describe many different things such as, abilities, possibilities, preference, permission or advice. With different levels of how strong each can be. There are many modals to choose from. Examples:
You should always be polite. - Should - Your choice to but best to
You could ride the train. – Could - can but don’t have too
You must do the dishes. – Must - have to do
You mustn’t drive thru a red light. - Mustn’t - cannot do
One of my favorite things to use teaching young students. Simply by asking them about things they must or must not do around their home. And things like what can you do or what things you cannot do.
One modal Example such as may is really the same as might. May is a more pleasant or polite way of asking or giving permission. Examples:
Might I have some cake?
May I have some cake? - More polite
Passive voice is basically the same base of active voice. But changing the focus of the subject and keeping the same tense of the sentence. Examples:
Active - A snake bit Joe. Passive - Joe was bitten by a snake
Active - A snake bites Joe. Passive - Joe is bitten by a snake
Active - A snake was biting Joe. Passive - Joe was being bitten by a snake
These can all be very difficult for students because of the “to be” to stay with the original sentence tense.
Phrasal verbs or multiple word verbs. There are 3 types of Phrasal verbs, Intransitive, Transitive separable, Transitive inseparable.
They are best to be introduced slowly and used in normally manor around students. To help them grasp the concepts. Such as get in, run over, pick up, slow down, speed up, keep up with, and sit up.
To me this is the fun part of English and can lead to many different ideas and areas. Part of my motto I teach with a “I Can Do it” attitude
