In Unit 8, the future tenses are comprehensively introduced. Like the present tenses and past tenses, the future tenses also include the future simple, the future continuous, the future perfect and the future perfect continuous. What’s more, the future tenses contain the present simple, the present continuous and be going+ infinitive which all have future applications. It seems a little difficult to distinguish, so we need study and teach more carefully. The future simple is associated with future facts/certainties, promises, predictions (with no present evidence), threats, assumptions/speculations, spontaneous decisions (decisions made at the time of speaking). Whilst going to future is associated with intentions, plans (decisions made before speaking), predictions (based on present evidence). The future continuous means action in progress at a specific future time. The future perfect is used to say that something will have been done, completed or achieved by a certain time in the future. The future perfect continuous mean how long something will have been continued by a certain time. The present simple suggests a more formal situation/ impersonal tone, for timetables/schedules. The present continuous is used for definite arrangement or decisions and plans without a time frame.
