As an introductory to the different tenses used in English I feel the present tense is ideal to start with since when learning a language or teaching someone one would be inclined to describe something that's factual or happening in the here and now.
Over and above this I also realise that there are several mistakes and errors that can be made purely as a result of the various rules and probability of mixing the different present tenses especially in the perfect and perfect continuous tenses. It's thus imperative to comprehend the structure of each tense in order to teach it and explain it.
With these rules and sentence structuring for each tense in mind one can better pre-empt potential mistakes and or misunderstandings especially within the written form. I feel I can now also better spot which mistakes have been made and or what the student wanted to say or tense was intended.
