Hamlin, West Virginia TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
Unit one explores both the necessary skills and roles which a teacher requires, as well as a breakdown of different learners in regards to both their ages and their language level.
This unit makes it clear that whilst teaching a good teacher will need to ensure that they are being kind, caring, motivating as well as being sensitive. They may and generally will have to use various types of teaching methods during teaching sessions in order to create a learning environment in order for their students to learn. These roles include that of a manager, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, facilitator, model and a monitor.
The unit explores different ages of learners and how they require different teaching styles. The young learner, for example, having a shorter attention span and less native language knowledge would require a different approach to that of adult learners and may benefit from games in order to keep them motivated, whilst a teen learner (14-18) may be reluctant to risk making mistakes in front of their peers and may benefit from the teacher taking the role as a participant, tutor or a model.
The unit also categorizes the different levels of a ability that their student are currently at; These are beginner, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate upper-intermediate and advanced.
The unit has taught me that may factors need to be considered in order for teachers to be "good" teachers and create "good students" and that a teacher should always be aware of their learners needs. They are able to do this by looking closely at the needs of their students, taking into consideration the age and level of ability that their students are at and adapt their teaching accordingly in order to keep the student motivated and interested.
