Although there the different form in the past tenses have key similarities to their respective present forms they are distinctly different.
Personally I’m learning more about the different forms of the tenses which one don't think about when conversing in general. This knowledge has enabled me to personally distinguish between the different tenses a lot better. The factor that time plays when describing a past action or occurrence that was happening in the past is rather key when establishing the tense. The past perfect continuous and past continuous is a good example.
These are however important when you want to attempt to teach about it none more so when teaching English as a foreign language. Once again the suggested samples activate stage ideas comes in handy; I like how the various activities can be adapted to practice more than one tense. Telling stories is a good example of applying the past continuous and past perfect.
