Bridgeport, West Virginia TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
The course book can both be an aid or a disadvantage in my opinion.
When starting out as a teacher the course book can be an aid since it's based on a specific syllabus designed to systematically (as well as progressively) introduce and test students on aspects of English at a given level.
However it has it flaws and can't exclusively be used for successful teaching of English. As a language teacher I believe the syllabus can be used as a guideline which can then be adapted/altered and supplemented to the needs of your students.
It is possible that students may develop a dislike or no interest in course books owing to the fact that in many cases the same publisher is used for different grades and they may get so used to (year in and year out) the often dated topics.
This is where you as a language teacher should be able to take the relevant material (applicable parts of the teaching syllabus) and incorporate it into a preferably original lesson based on current events (matters tailored to the students).
In a nutshell there should be a balance between using authentic and created material, bearing in mind that the learning outcomes of the students should match (ideally) their long term motivation to use the language.
