Receptive skills are highly important and can sometimes be very difficult for EL students to master. The “Engage” part of this lesson needs to be very rewarding for students so they can fully commit to the lesson, otherwise they might not understand. I think the main reason many students don’t enjoy reading is because it is either difficult for them or they don’t comprehend/understand what is happening in the story. This is a huge factor and problem I see too often. Without comprehension, all other types of English skills are almost pointless to teach unless students will have a grasp on the basics of comprehension. I personally believe that reading comprehension extends far beyond answering “comprehension questions” on a worksheet, but that is definitely a place to start.
