In unit 14, I learned about the use of course books and lesson materials. There are pros and cons to using course books. A course book will contain a syllabus that is graded to a level suitable for the students. It is a time-consuming process for a teacher to develop a syllabus from scratch. Course books usually have a balanced mix of the important aspects of English learning, and they usually have been tried and tested before publication. Course books will provide a good framework for teachers, but teachers should not be completely dependent on them.
The books won’t always fit the needs or interests of the class. Certain student groups will have greater difficulties learning certain aspects and will require different approaches than the book. By strictly following the curriculums from books, teachers can become complacent and overlook the needs of the class. It is best that teachers not base all their lessons from course books. A course book can be used to provide a general guideline, but the teacher will have to adapt the lessons to best suit the class.
