Testing and evaluation are the best methods to track a student's language abilities and progress before, during, and after an EFL course. Tutorials are a way to review work that has been done throughout the week to ensure that everyone is on the same page and properly prepared for any testing that may take place. Student evaluations provide insight into how the course is working, what should remain the same and what should change in order for it to improve. Testing is appropriate at certain checkpoints during the entirety of the course. Placement tests are designed to determine a student's language level before entering a course in order to enter them into the appropriate language level course. They are usually made up of common grammar and vocabulary as well as written and spoken portion. Progress tests are designed specifically to mark progress of the student's retention and note what may still need work. Diagnostic tests allow a teacher to understand where the class as a whole stands in order to create lessons accordingly. Finally, practice tests are designed to prepare a student for external exams which are designated for all different purposes, some being for business purposes; others for residential as well as education. Without testing it is difficult for a student to see their strengths and weaknesses. Without testing, a student would not be getting a well-rounded language learning experience.
