There are 8 basic parts of speech in the English language. These parts include nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns and prepositions/conjunctions. There are "rules" that govern the use of each of the parts of speech; however, there are exceptions to each "rule" which gives the English language the reputation for being difficult to learn. An example is that a person should not use the word "the" before names of countries EXCEPT that it is considered correct to say the United States or the Netherlands which are both countries. That is just one of many examples that could be given about exceptions to the rules of the English language.
