This unit defines and explains the variety of methods used for teaching english as a foreign language. I've learned that there is tremendous variety and and endless scope to the the method that is being taught in this course but that it follows three basic stages: engage, study and activate. The ways in which teacher employs these stages will vary based on the level of the class and likely the age of the students. A teacher must warm up the class by engaging all students in using the English language; this can be done by implementing any number of different activities which basically serve as an icebreaker to the remainder of the lesson. The teacher is to help the students learn new language points during the study phase, as well as correct language errors and mistakes, if such seem like they will become ingrained and seriously impede understanding. Then correction must identify the inaccuracy, where the error is and what kind it is. This should be done compassionately so as not to discourage further participation or quell enthusiasm. The most important thing is for a teacher to focus on the student discovery rather than their own diatribe. The activate stage will help with this as it encourages the student to implement what they have learned and use their new language skills in a creative way.
