This unit mentioned that for a student to learn English well they must be exposed to the language, understand the meaning of the language, understand the construction of the language and be able to practice and produce the language. This is accomplished by a teacher adapting their ESA, or Engage, Study and Activate lesson plans according to the class in order to help the students learn vocabulary, grammar, and functions of the English language. The type of lesson plan will depend on what is being taught. The straight arrow ESA approach is useful for grammar and vocabulary lessons while boomerang and patchwork ESA plans may well serve functions based lessons. What a student needs to learn when presenting new language is the meaning of the vocabulary or language, how and when such language or vocabulary is used, the grammar explaining where the word belongs as well as forms and patterns for such grammar, the interaction of the word with others, the pronunciation of the word and how such language is used in spoken as well as written form, particularly if there are any differences between the two.
