I was really excited about this unit because it is something we don’t come across in our teaching credential program. I don’t think I’ve studied phonics since 2nd grade, so this was a really interesting unit to delve into. One thing I found interesting was the different between voiced and unvoiced consonants. The trick to putting your hand on your throat to feel the vibration (or lack thereof) is great, and something I’ve never heard before! I will definitely be doing this trick with my students as they often struggle with many consonants that sound similar to non-native English speakers. The other thing I really liked in this unit was seeing how different sounds are produced. For examples, I’d never really thought about the fact that “m” and “n” are nasal sounds. In fact, if you try to say those sounds with your nose plugged, it’s nearly impossible. This is another great trick I will do with my students.
