This unit covered teaching the productive skills speaking and writing. It was explained that writing is often focused on less heavily than speaking by language teachers because of the quiet time required to practice writing. However, teaching writing increases accuracy better than speaking, while speaking increases fluency more easily, so they are both equally important to teach. I thought it was interesting to read that speaking fluency is often more popular for students, because as a shyer, less self-confident student, I would often rather focus on writing than speaking in my language classes growing up. This goes to show that different student personalities make it necessary to appeal to different motivators for students to ensure that they get a well-rounded understanding of the material.
