Speaking and writing are such important skills that students need to learn, but as mentioned in the unit, often get overlooked by reading and grammar. When a teacher is lecturing or teaching or talking, students do not get any talk time, so I really liked all the activities to get students speaking. One line that stood out to me was to have students focus on the “process” not the “product.” This is a great thing for me to keep in mind because I will often have my students share their response with a partner or group member before saying it out loud. I know that during these unstructured talk times, students probably aren’t using academic vocabulary or complete sentences. However, when I think about the process of what they are doing, it is more acceptable that their sharing time probably doesn’t sound perfect.
I’ve also found that the sillier I am in front of my middle school students, the more they are willing to contribute responses and answer questions. I don’t like calling on students, so sometimes I will ask for “a volunteer that I haven’t heard from yet” and sure enough, a quieter student will raise a timid hand and contribute a meaningful response.
