As a native English speaker that was taught verb conjugation and sentence diagramming in my middle school years, I find this section cumbersome. Using verb tenses and helping verbs correctly is extremely important, but I can understand how this would be confusing and frustrating for the person learning English as a second language. Even our labels of present simple, present continuous, present perfect and present perfect continuous are confusing and not very informative. I think that the most important point in this section is the reminder to maximize student talk time and have students use language freely and on an open ended way. This is only be accomplished by very carefully chosen age appropriate, level appropriate activities conducted in an environment in which the students feel safe to make mistakes and experiment with language.
