During this unit I have learned the importance of classroom atmosphere. It is not only curriculum material that determines effective learning, but also the area in which the learning is taking place. I learned that while the teacher is the head of the classroom, student participation maintains balance and efficiency as well as understanding. An environment is everything in a classroom and that even includes seating arrangements. The desk is where the student spends a majority of their time while in the class and it is important that placement fits the dynamic of the class. For smaller classes a horseshoe or half circle arrangement makes for a more intimate atmosphere. The teacher still sits at the head of the class, but the students are now able to see and interact with one another. Rows are great for larger classrooms as they help in reducing disciplinary issues and the teacher should still be able to move about the classroom with ease. Separate tables create smaller groups within the class and take focus away from the teacher. This does however make it easier for the teacher to move from small group to small group to interact in a smaller setting. Where a teacher ends up in the classrooms depends on the activity taking place. A teacher usually spends time in the beginning of the period explaining the lesson and giving instruction as to how the activity will be carried out. It is important that students understand what is expected of them. When giving instruction, the teacher should refrain from long winded explanation, keeping it as simple as possible. Visual clues and demonstration often help with this part as well. At this point the teacher will also ask students to repeat instructions to ensure comprehension of the activity before splitting off into group or individual work. The organization of an activity is based mostly on the type of activity at hand. Some activities are better suited for individual work whereas other activities are better played out in pairs or groups. While the activity is taking place the teacher should relax control, but be available for help if needed. The teacher should be seated away from the activity at hand, ready for any questions that may arise. It is important for a teacher to establish a good relationship with the class founded on mutual respect. A good way to maintain this is by always being prepared and punctual. A good teacher is fair and consistent and never makes threats of punishment that cannot be carried out. if there are issues with behavior, they should be addressed immediately, but in a way that does not further fuel the situation or embarrass the student. There are many factors that breathe life into a well-orchestrated classroom and everyday can differ. It is up to the teacher to take note of these changes and act accordingly.
