As I was reviewing this unit, it made me realize how strange, yet also uncommon future tenses are. We often talk about events in the future, things that will happen, or things that we will do. However, we rarely speak about these actions in the actual future tense. The two “other” types of future tenses like the “be going future” and the two types of present tenses to describe future actions.
I have a friend who learned English as a second language, albeit at a very young age. One thing I’ve noticed is that he often uses future tenses to say simple things. Instead of saying “When are we leaving?” he’ll say, “When will we be leaving?” I’ve always thought this was interesting and always sounded so proper, but knowing now how he probably learned English, it makes a lot of sense.
