This unit outlines the importance of knowing your audience. Not every language learning class is the same. There are many things to take into consideration especially when planning a course. Teaching English can be done in a class of beginners, one-on-one individual students, a class of young learners, learners of business English or English for Specific Purposes, and finally multilingual or monolingual classrooms. Lesson plans for each of these courses will look very different, but there will be me similar key elements. The term beginner is actually split up into categories such as the absolute beginner, the false beginner, the adult beginner, the young beginner, and the beginner without the Roman alphabet. Teaching any beginner requires special skill and psychology as the teacher must be aware of the students' needs and have realistic aims for the classroom as a whole. The problem a lot of teachers face is due to the different levels among the beginners, so there will be tendencies of having to help weaker students. The best fix for this is pairing them with a stronger student and also give them extra work to help them catch up. Teaching one-on-one has quite a few advantages -- there are no mixed levels, the students are usually very motivated, needs are focused and more defined and the teacher has the ability to develop a closer bond with the student. The hardest part about teaching privately is the lack of 1-1 activities as many require larger classroom settings. However, there is still a good amount that if varied, the teacher should have no issue in keeping the material interesting and the student motivated. Some things to keep in mind when teaching children is to speak slowly and clearly, use higher pitch and exaggerated intonation and repetition. another important thing to remember is to set the example for the classroom to establish and maintain a disciplined environment. For Business English, the most important thing to remember is that most people in the classroom hold all different levels of knowledge on the English language. Also, most classes are taking place after a work day, so people are tired and need extra motivation. One thing to keep in mind, is while it is important to do research on the company clients work for, the teacher is not expected to be fluent in the industry which will encourage the student to explain their profession and key terms in English to the teacher. In monolingual classrooms, the students will have similar difficulties with English, whereas students of a multilingual classroom often have very different problems and difficulties. While there are many different classroom dynamics, the most important thing to remember across the board is to be patient enthusiastic and understanding.
