This unit deals with the teaching of productive skills: writing and speaking. Both are used for communication, one directly with one or more person(s) in front of you, the other in a more formal way, indirectly to other people.
When considering speaking, we have to think about accuracy and fluency. Accuracy is focused on how you pronounce a word, and therefore, the activities around accuracy are more controlled (such as drilling for example) and more suited for the study phase. Fluency is focused on not stopping while speaking, and the activities are more creative and more oriented to the activate stage.
Writing is often relegated to homework, because during a lesson, it will cause a ‘quiet time’. But it is as important as speaking. Some difficulties that can come with writing include handwriting (sometimes difficult if the students don’t use a Latin based alphabet), spelling and punctuation. Writing can be either creative (poetry or stories) or situational (emails, formal letter ...).
