Bowling Green, Washington TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit, I was able to experience a visual example of how body language and attitude makes a world of difference in a classroom. In the first lesson, the teacher enters the room and the students are already seated as if they had been waiting on him. The teacher should have been in the classroom before the students arrived to greet them and already have the classroom prepared for the lesson. Then the teacher goes right into teaching rather than warming up the classroom. He does not bother to learn the students' names, nor does he try to break the ice in any way. Because of this, the students were reluctant to participate when it came to the first part of the lesson. His lesson was very disorganized and hard to follow, which is hard enough in a regular classroom. When teaching English as a second language, organization in the classroom will make it easier for the students to stay engaged and comfortable to participate. The teacher was also incredibly demeaning and made the students feel bad when they answered incorrectly. He oftentimes laughed at answers he found to be silly are did not go with the question. With this students, are more likely to disconnect from the lesson and allow their mind to go elsewhere. If a student does not feel comfortable when they get things wrong, then they are less likely to try. The first lesson was hard to watch, but it did a good job of outlining what makes a good learning atmosphere. When the teacher is disconnected, disinterested and in a rush, there is no way to expect the students to retain anything from the day. This is a waste of time and does not benefit anyone. The second lesson has a completely different vibe and the students appear to be more comfortable with the teacher. They are not afraid to participate and therefore remain attentive from start to finish.
