This was a particularly long and wide-ranging unit that covered teaching pronunciation and phonology. It started by stating that this is usually the most neglected part of teaching English because it can be difficult and downright intimidating to try and understand well enough to teach to non-native English-speakers, and by the end I could certainly understand why. There was a *lot* for even a native English-speaker to learn before that person could begin to try and teach it to someone else. Detecting the rise and fall of speech can be difficult, even though we all do it naturally, and learning a new set of symbols for phonemes adds an extra layer of translation. Some of it ends up seeming like a student would have to already be fairly advanced in learning English to understand how to be taught these concepts *in English*, so I was glad to see that there are some less complicated ways of teaching them.
