In this last grammar unit, we focused more on nuance--on the ways in which modals can determine probability or formality, on how passive voice allows us to emphasize the object rather than the subject, and on the phrasal verbs that allow us to describe relationships and actions with more precision. The order in which these topics were presented--first, modals; second, passive voice; and third, phrasal verbs--also corresponds to the order in which these topics should be taught. While I teach my fourth-grade elementary school students some modals ("I can sing well," "What would you like?"), I currently only teach phrasal verbs during my adult conversation class.
Even for me, before reading this unit, I'd never thought about the difference between separable and inseparable phrasal verbs. It's one of those things that just comes naturally to me as a native speaker. Because of that, Question 20 of this test took me a minute to think through! I'm really glad this unit gave me the language to explain this grammatical nuance, even to native speakers. This was a great way to end the course's grammar-focused units.
