This unit explained some techniques to teaching vocab, grammar and functions. It focused on highlighting the important aspects that students should be exposed to when learning these different things e.g. meaning, use, interaction w/other words, spelling, pronunciation, form/pattern etc. It also highlighted the important aspect of appropriacy aka relevance, something that is of utmost importance in our classrooms on the ground, where language is first and foremost a lifeskill thereby making it of the utmost importance that our classes deliver relevant, life-saving content that can facilitate a persons understanding of their situation, options and engagements with society. Thus far very few resources are available for the refugee education context and topics/themes/vocab in books remain detached from the daily reality of our students. However these challenges continue to be overcome with creativity and the content of this TEFL ensures that I and our teachers reflect the best teaching practices in the most unstable contexts.
