A language school can use different ways to evaluate their students. First, a placement test. This one helps the school to know in which English level group can place the student. Diagnostic test, which is done at the beginning of the course in order to help the teacher to see what do the students know already regarding the English language. Progress test, helps the teacher to evaluate the student's progression during the course. And, finally, practice test which follows the format and the structure of the external examination that the students are being given in preparation for.
There are many external examinations for entering college, or for business English. However, the most known around the world is the one made by Cambridge Assessment for general English. There are four levels. CAE and CPE are the highest levels.
At this moment, I don't have any student that is studying for any of these external exams. But, knowing about the different external examinations help me to see what kind of goals a student may mark for his/her English language. Also, I must recognize that I have used placement tests for my private students in order to know what kind of level they have. And, from now on, if I have a new student, I will go for the diagnostic test in order to make sure exactly the level of English that my student has.
