As an experienced teacher I know that classroom management is essential for being able to teach students. From my experience, having a good rapport with students is the most important aspect of classroom management. Even students who are not motivated to learn or who do not want to be at school for various reasons, will participate more if they have a good rapport with the teacher and with classmates.
I currently teach at a virtual school where students do the majority of their work online, but we also have live lessons and classroom activities. Having a good rapport with my students is critical to getting them to choose to complete independent practice and to work with classmates when needed.
When I started teaching eight years ago I had no classroom management skills at all. Today I feel that, besides content knowledge, this is my strength. I no longer have discipline issues in my classroom because from day one I make sure students know they are valued and respected.
