As an English teacher not only must we be able to teach grammar, vocabulary and a variety of required skills to be fluent in English but we must ensure learners can communicate naturally and feel comfortable speaking the language. With pronunciation comes intonation and stress that must be practiced to sound more natural. I have seen the phonemic symbols but have never taught them. I also feel hesitant because I don't remember learning them as a child. But in order to help students grasp English, knowledge of mouth movements, phonemic symbols and guidelines would greatly enhance the teaching in classroom.
