I found the metaphor of the tree's anatomy to portray the balance of language-learning very incisive. The trunk represents grammar, but the vocabulary and functions are where you'll find the leaves and more colorful aspects of the tree. They all depend on each other to fulfill their potential in conveying meaning and intelligible communication. So, it is essential to strive for a balance between those components, which is what this unit deals with: creating a balance to be sure that the student's 'tree' is a solid balance of leaves (vocabulary / functions), trunk (grammar), etc. The Unit is also partly building on certain concepts that were introduced in a previous Unit, going into more depth on ways in which to best harness the three phases of a lesson (Engage, Study, Activate) to make the most progress.
