I have used every one of these tests in my teaching career. I have given diagnostic exams at the beginning of the year to determine what my students know and what they don't know so that I can plan my lessons with more emphasis on what they don't know. I know what is on the achievement test, so I have similar questions on my diagnostic tests.
Last year our school district began providing a diagnostic test for students, but teachers only received their scores, not information about what questions were missed or even what questions were on the tests. It seemed to be more of a way for the district to evaluate teachers than students.
It is important to evaluate students on a regular basis, to see what progress they are making, but this should not be how teachers are evaluated.
I have also used practice tests in my class when helping students prepare for the ACT. I have found that the more students work with practice tests the more successful they are at the exam. Sometimes just learning how to take a test and being familiar with the format can help students earn a higher score.
