Lynndyl, Utah TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
The most important reiteration made in this model is the mutli-faceted role of the teacher. I work with vulnerable groups for whom engagement in educational activities such as language learning is first and foremost a psycho-social intervention, so the role of the teacher is really to be a mentor, an observer, a facilitator, a model and a participant; the teacher must build good rapport, demonstrate patience, kindness and calm, and be a source of motivation for her students in order to ensure retention of the most vulnerable. Once a healing environment has been created and students can re-engage in learning again, the teacher must be able to shift through the various roles she has in order to ensure meaningful engagement with class content. Multi-level classes are very common and require the teacher to be organized and able to manage very diverse student bodies, who differ by age, experience, language, motivation etc. Many are there to take their minds of their complex reality, while others are there with the intention of mastering the language and thereby increasing their employability options or access to formal education - this makes the teachers role very central in the development of each of her students, and requires the teacher to master switching between different roles in order to reach her students effectively.
