Fielding, Utah TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit is all about methods of teaching English, where teaching theories have contributed to the suggested method of teaching--that is, the ESA (Engage, Study, Activate). The ESA method is effective in teaching English as a foreign language because the first stage, which is ENGAGE, prepares the students for the lesson proper, as this serves as a warm-up by encouraging each and every one to talk and feel comfortable using English. During this stage, the teacher should not correct mistakes that are committed. Instead, mistakes should be taken note of, and included for discussion in the next stage. After setting the mood, the next stage, which is the STUDY stage, now focuses on the learning concept/s (language and its construction) that students need to know. In this stage, the teacher must be able to elicit information from the students which may serve as the springboard for the discussion of language concepts. This should be followed by exercises or drills to reinforce the learning. For the last stage, this allows for the students to build on what they have learned and allows for the creativity in the use of the language. Should there be mistakes and/or errors noted during this stage, the STUDY stage may repeated with another ACTIVATE stage to end the session. It has to be noted that while the basic pattern is the E-S-A, different arrangements/permutation of the stages may be done, as long as it starts with the ENGAGE stage and ends with the ACTIVATE stage. Worth noting also are suggested activities that may be used for these different stages.
