I found this unit especially fun because much of the material was already familiar to me. As a trained opera singer, I was required to learn the international phonetic alphabet and understand how we make all of these sounds. I also know, from this experience, that pronunciation is a tricky subject and takes a lot of experimentation to figure out what our mouth and throat have to do to create all of the sounds in the English language. Besides the phonetics, this unit also stressed how irregular English is and how this is such a challenge for English learners. As a native English speaker I found the Shaw poem especially poignant and a great representation of how difficult the spelling and pronunciation in English is.
