Wink, Texas TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
The unit presented different methodologies for teaching L2. The strong and weak sides of each methodology were briefly pointed out as well as to when is it appropriate to use them.
Despite the methodology used, the students always need not only to be exposed to the language, acquire new knowledge and be encouraged to discover the new language by themselves, but also to be able to eventually generate real practical use of the language.
It was suggested that the best way to achieve all these points is by using ESA methodology - engage, study and activate. The general "straight arrow" structure of an ESA class was explained as well as several variations depending on students' needs and the current level of their L2 proficoency.
Some examples were given about what can be used for each phase of an ESA class. For instance - in the Engage phase - information prompts, sharing information with a partner, different games; for the Study phase - games for practicing pronunciation, spelling, understanding the meaning, such as tongue twisters, hangman, gap fill, etc. Ideas for the Activate phase include role plays, debates and story building.
It was stressed that diving feedback is always necessary so that the students can follow their personal progress and keep improving. The feedback should be positive and encouraging. Correction and Praising were also introduced.
The unit was very helpful to me. I realized I had used bits and pieces from some of the methodologies, but I haven't been aware of it, nor have I used them in their full potential. Looking forward to putting this new knowledge into practice.
