Present Tenses
English has twelve verb tenses. There are three times: past, present, and future. Each of these times has four aspects: simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous.
-Present Simple
I work. You do not work. Does she work?
The present simple is used for habitual or permanent actions and for instructions, commentaries, headlines, present stories, and historical sequences.
-Present continuous
I am learning, You aren't learning. Is she learning?
This tense is used for actions that are in progress or developping. Non-action words are usually not used in the continuous form.
-Present perfect
I have written. You haven't written. Has he written?
This tens is used for actions completed at an unspecified time, completed actions that happened in a a time period that is not complete, ongoing actions that began in the past (with for or since), and past actions with present results. Many verbs have irregular past participles.
-Present perfect continuous
I have been dancing. You have't been dancing. Have they been dancing?
This form is used to communicate that an action is ongoing or to describe a recently completed action with present results. The emphasis is on the activity rather than the result or object.
