Uncertain, Texas TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit covers the modal and phrasal verbs as well as the passive voice. The modal verbs alone provide many opportunities for ELLs to learn and practice the subtleties of the English language (for example, the small shifts in tone between must, might, may, and have to). They are also very common and I think a lesson on some of them could also be used to build vocabulary, in particular, certain verbs in their base form. Phrasal verbs are also used quite a bit in everyday speech and are complicated because they are idiomatic. That is they make no sense literally and may be untranslatable. I can see how it might at some point in and ELLs language journey to teach the passive versus the active voice. Though it would no doubt be for higher level students, understanding the way the passive voice works will limit confusion and misunderstanding. The passive voice can often confuse who the actor or subject of a sentence may be.
