Within Unit 15, tests and evaluations are discussed. Tests provide the teacher with insight into many different aspects of a student. Tests can be used in the prior to the class starting and throughout the course. Exams used before the class starts are called placement tests. Placement tests are taken by the students in order to put them in the correct level class with peers that have similar skill levels. Further, diagnostic tests are taken before the course begins because this shows the teacher what the students know and can then plan their lessons accordingly. Throughout the course, teachers will use progress tests that show how well the students are retaining the information being taught to them. Whether a teacher desires to make the progress test formal or informal is up to them, but it is important to be able to measure the comprehension of the students. Teachers also provide practice tests for students, which prepares them for external exams. External exams are formal tests given by accredited institutions. In some cases, passing an external exam shows mastery of the language and is required for jobs, college, etc.
