This first unit was an overview of what makes a 'good' teacher and also what makes a 'good' student. The unit covered qualities of a good teacher such as being fair, motivational and knowledge of subject. Discussed were the different roles a teacher has in the classroom. Some examples were manager, prompter, assessor and model. These examples were covered in detail and showed how a teacher might uniquely approach their lessons in class. Covered were qualities of a good student such as having a desire to learn, asking questions, acceptance of errors and being responsive to feedback. Also discussed were hurdles a teacher would have to recognize and overcome depending on the age of the learner. Young learners were classified into three different groups based on a range of age. The youngest will have short attention spans and will learn through fun games, songs and dance. The middle young will be more 'self-absorbed' but receptive to new sounds, words and grammar. The oldest of the young learners will generally be unmotivated and unwilling to take risks so a teacher might have to encourage more often in order to get progress. With adult learners, teachers will find them more motivated because they've made the choice to be in that class. Those student will have different reasons for learning a new language such as improving economic status, ability to travel the world, communicate with peers and colleagues or just an overall interest in new languages. Lastly, the different classifications or levels of proficiency were discussed. These classifications range from Beginner to Elementary and from Intermediate to Advanced. Overall I feel that I have a clear understanding of the differences between teachers and students and how each play their role in the classroom. I learned that being a teacher is more about centering around students rather than centered around yourself.
