This unit gave two examples of a straight arrow Engage, Study, and Activate lesson. The first video was to demonstrate common mistakes teachers may make in teaching language. The teacher forgot to do things such as build rapport with the students, give explanation to either of the activities, and encourage students as they are eliciting the grammar point. This led to a very confused classroom where the students were constantly guessing what the teacher wanted of them.
The second lesson gave a very thorough outline of what a straight arrow ESA lesson should include. At the start of the class, the teacher worked hard to build rapport by introducing himself to each student and learning his/her name. He then moved through the lesson in the correct order and gave ample explanation at each point in the lesson. What I noticed most was that at the end of lesson as he was eliciting responses from the students, he went for fluency more than accuracy which I would have forgotten was the goal. This is something I want to remember for when I am teaching.
