Unit 1 of this course is about the characteristics, responsibilities and roles of teachers and students.
I learned some personality traits a good teacher will have and some ways a good teacher builds relationships in the classroom. A good teacher is summarized to care about his/her teaching, but before all about what his/her students learn.
A teacher can take on different roles that can be used in different situations. Sometimes the teacher will be very directive, while at other times he/she will be not be so obviously present and play a role more in the background.
A good learner will possess some specific qualities that can be encouraged and promoted by the teacher. To describe a “good learner” we will also have to consider factors like cultural background, age, motivation and previous learning and life experience.
I also learned the most common distinctions of language level and their characteristics. It’s important to bear in mind that these are not very strict levels, they can differ depending on the country or the teaching environment you’re in or the text book you’re using.
The last subject of the unit was about different types of motivation a student could have to learn English. Motivation is often higher in adults because it’s often a more conscious choice for them.
