Teaching Receptive Skills
There are 4 basic skills in any language: receptive skill--reading and listening--and productive skills--speaking and writing. This chapter is about teaching the receptive skills. Reasons for reading and listening can be divided into two broad categories: for a purpose and for entertainment.
A number of mental skills are required to really understand content through reading and listening: predictive skills, scanning for specific information, skimming for general content, absorbing detailed information, and deducing meaning from context.
Language students will encounter many problems connected with the language, topic, and related tasks of texts. Teachers can introduce new vocabulary and structures prior to reading or listening to a new text. Pre-teaching must be balanced with giving students access to unknown language. The teacher should also carefully select authentic and non-authentic texts. Texts with interesting topics will help motivate and engage students. Different people will find different texts interesting, but the teacher can create interest by getting students engaged. Tasks should be challenging but promote understanding.
