Past Tense
There are some general patterns in verb forms: continuous forms contain 'to be' + -ing form; perfect forms are 'to have' + past participle; perfect continuous forms are 'to have' + been + -ing form.
Past Simple - I worked, you didn't work, did she work? This form is used for actions that happened at a definite time in the past. The word 'ago' is a hint that the tense is most likely past simple.
Past Continuous - I was running, you weren't running, was he running? This form implies that an action was in progress at a specific time in the past.
Past perfect - I had finished, you hadn't finished, had they finished? This form indicates that actions were completed at some time before other past actions. It is for, "the past in the past."
Past Perfect Continuous - I had been seeing, you hadn't been seeing, had she been seeing? This form described actions in the past that happened continuously up to the moment we are talking about.
