While this unit provided some new insights, it also confirmed to me that I am following a good method for teaching. Some of the information in this unit coincides with what I have been doing in my ESOL classes. For example, recently I needed to teach the "there is, there are" structures and I used this as an opportunity to also introduce household vocabulary. We started with the Engage phase - a shout out, if you will, of the words pertaining to the household that the students already know. I then in explained the grammatical structure and gave written activities such as word searches, matching worksheets, and other worksheets for the Study phase. For the Activate phase, after students drew a floor plan of their homes, they did pair work to practice the grammar structure and vocabulary and then presented a speech describing their homes to the class.
