This unit discusses the importance of reading and listening in language acquisition. Both are receptive skills; receptive in that you are receiving information, orally or through the written word. Both are equally important and should be part of each lesson. There are many ways to incorporate these skills into a lesson, but it is important to do so in a way that will increase confidence and motivation. Authentic texts can be helpful as they go beyond the texts designed for language learning into topics that might interest the students in general. Perhaps a reading or oral interview about something that interests a student and that they understand in their native language will be the motivating factor that allows them to continue their practice outside of the classroom. I can speak and understand a little Spanish, but I've noticed that reading in Spanish is much easier. I think this is because the written word is captured and I can take my time in understanding it.
