Unit 7 focuses on how to teach vocabulary, grammar and functions of the English language. When it comes to teaching vocabulary, teachers must consider the level of difficulty of the vocabulary based on the similarity to the student's own language, similarity to English words already known, spelling and pronunciation, and appropriateness. Furthermore, choosing vocabulary is a challenge so teachers should consider the following: appropriacy to the students, appropriacy to the task, frequency and coverage, and teachability. After vocabulary selection, students need to know the meaning, use, word grammar, interaction, spelling and pronunciation. When introducing grammatical structures, students must learn the meaning, use, forms and patterns, and the spoken and written forms. Lastly, teaching language functions (inviting, refusing, agreeing, disagreeing, suggesting, etc) includes the appropriateness of the type of language used (formal, informal, tentative, technical, etc). Language function lessons will emphasize the activation aspect of the language, and the boomerang and patchwork approaches of the ESA lessons will be most useful.
