As I do not come from a background of teaching, this lesson was of particular interest to me. The Harmer method of motivating students to engage in lessons on language learning is the ESA, or Engage, Study and Activate method. During the engage portion an instructor should pique the interest of students through games and group activities designed to get them involved in the learning process. Study is the traditional portion of a lesson during which pronunciation, vocabulary, context and new concepts are taught and reviewed for usage. The final component is the Activate stage, where a student engages with the other members of the class in a way that is designed to utilize all vocabulary they have acquired up to that point, integrating and synthesizing it with their newly acquired knowledge of the language. I enjoyed the portion of the lesson that talked about the ways in which these three stages of learning could be arranged and rearranged to most affectively aid in the language learning process, and that there is no “one-size-fits-all” method of teaching. The ability to be flexible in response to the needs of your learners is essential, and I appreciated the emphasis on it greatly.
