It is important for a new teacher to establish rapport with the class in the first lesson. The teacher is also to find out about students' interests and motivations for taking the class. The individual level of each student should also be tested for by the teacher in order to lesson plan and gauge the skill set of the class. Ways to help a large range of skill levels in a class is to pair the weaker students with each other and the stronger students alike. With large class sizes, the teacher can manage the students easier by using worksheets, pair/group work, choral repetition, and more extreme dynamics while teaching. For reluctant students, teachers should be extra sensitive and patient so they feel comfortable enough to contribute eventually. The teacher can help the reluctant student become more comfortable by providing plenty of pair work, using a tape recorder, using role-play, and using a controlled practice.
