Speaking a language and teaching a language are two different things. The depth of what grammar is in a language is something one must learn to be able to teach a language to others. Unit 2 is where we learn the parts of speech of the English language, its purpose, and functions in a sentence. To be honest, I love learning English as a whole when I was a student but learning how to teach the English language to others, I discovered that grammar is my weakest point. I am fortunate enough that my native language (Filipino) is more or less similar in grammar structure so I somehow had an idea of what is ahead of me. Learning the parts of speech is more than the memorization of English words and terminologies. It is more than recognizing where they are in a sentence. It is understanding that each part of speech is important and for you to understand and comprehend a sentence as a whole, you have to know its parts and how each part functions, where they are they in the sentence and the meaning they add to the sentence. This chapter helped me recall the basic knowledge I need to know to teach the English language.
